After her call to the Ontario Bar, Ms. Mitchell worked as an entertainment law specialist at the law firm Farano Green (later merged with the law firm Gardiner Roberts LLP) During her time at Farano Green / Gardiner Roberts she represented numerous music publishers, songwriters, recording artists, record companies, distributors, and film and television production companies. Ms. Mitchell also assisted clients with respect to the acquisition, sale, financing and distribution of catalogues and intellectual property assets owned or controlled by them.
In 2001, Ms. Mitchell (together with Edmund L. Glinert) co-founded Casablanca Media Publishing (“Casablanca”). Since the company’s formation Ms. Mitchell served as its Vice President, and in conjunction with Mr. Glinert, she helped build Casablanca into a leading independent Canadian music publisher successfully representing such publishers as 20th Century Fox, Carlin America, Bug/BMG, Chrysalis/BMG, Arc Music, Imagem, Barton Music, the estate of Roy Orbison, AC/DC, and many songwriters such as Steve Miller, Jimmy Webb, Michelle Wright, and Melissa Etheridge among others. After Mr. Glinert’s passing in 2011, Ms. Mitchell became the President of Casablanca (a title which she continues to hold).
More recently Ms. Mitchell founded Red Brick Music Publishing (“Red Brick”) for new business development and song writer signings. Ms. Mitchell serves as the President of Red Brick and in the past year, she has built Red Brick into another leading music publisher in Canada, representing such prestigious catalogues as Concord Music Group, Abkco, Disney Music Group, Kassner Associated Publishers, Budde Music, Round Hill Music, and the estate of John Lennon to name a few. Red Brick has also built an impressive roster of songwriters, including the members of the bands Cuff The Duke, the Rural Alberta Advantage, PS I Love You, Tupelo Honey, Mad June, Library Voices, Field Mouse, On An On, Hands Up!, Hayden Bursk and The Careful Ones.
Ms. Mitchell is currently a member of a number of professional and industry organizations including the International Association of Entertainment lawyers, Canadian Independent Record Production Association, Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and the Law Society of Upper Canada. She is a member of the Board of Directors for SOCAN, CMRRA and CMPA, and also sits the advisory committee for the Ontario Media Development Corporation.
