Front of House with Brittany Chin

Jun 6, 2023 by CMRRA Communications Coordinator

June’s Front of House features Brittany Chin, CMRRA’s Quality Assurance Analyst. Brittany was the recipient of the Quality Assurance Developmental Opportunity, a program that supports professional growth within CMRRA. Learn about her behind-the-scenes work, passion for technology and how she came to work in the music industry.

You just celebrated your 5-year anniversary of working at CMRRA and recently received the Quality Assurance Developmental Opportunity, congratulations! What made you want to pursue this new challenge?

Thank you, time is flying by! I’ve always been interested in technology as a hobby, specifically around computers. I’ve built my own computer and run my own server in my free time so I’m always troubleshooting any issues that arise. When this opportunity presented itself, I knew it would be a good match since it combines the two things I enjoy, music and technology.

In your current role, what are the main differences in your daily work compared to when you were an Online Licensing Administrator?

As an Online Licensing Administrator, I worked on a song level, making various updates to the musical work data within our system such as linking musical works with the recording information provided by digital service providers or modifying shares that require revisions. Whereas now I’m behind the scenes, I get to see what goes into processing different data and how that data interconnects with each other. It’s been a lot to learn since there are so many layers, but I like the challenge.

What do you see as your biggest accomplishment so far in your new position?

I assisted in testing a more efficient way to process smaller client catalogues. It was the first project I worked on in this new role and it taught me a lot about not only testing but how the different processes work within our system. As the project continued, I became the lead tester, and I was able to see this project to completion and launch. This taught me the process of software development as all of that was new to me.

What made you want to pursue a career in the music industry?

Sadly, I’m not musically inclined but music has helped me in many ways to this very day. I didn’t fully know back in high school that working in the music industry was an option, but I discovered the Music Business Management program at Durham College, I went for it and here I am today.

What are your top 3 favourite albums?

War Paint by The Dangerous Summer
Yours Truly Forever by Phora
Renaissance by Beyoncé

All three of these albums are important to me as they represent different periods in my life.
