Writers on Track Featuring Julian Taylor

Feb 4, 2025 by CMRRA Communications Coordinator

Writers on Track features self-published singer-songwriter Julian Taylor, a dynamic and celebrated artist who has been a cornerstone of Canada’s musical landscape for over two decades. His work has garnered widespread acclaim, including nominations for the JUNOS, Canadian Folk Music Awards, Native American Music Awards, and the Polaris Music Prize. Taylor’s distinctive versatility as a songwriter continues to captivate audiences and critics alike.

What’s your favourite part of the songwriting process?

My favourite part about writing is tapping into another plane of existence. As an artist I truly believe each and every one of us has been granted gifts by the creator. Gifts that are intended to be used to connect one another. The word “universe” in Latin means “one-song” and we all sing it. As a musician, writer and artist I feel that it’s our job to document the human condition and find ways to connect with each other in our similarities rather than our differences. Artists are granted an opportunity to tap in and visit the other side. That is the side that soul resides and that not everyone is able to write about but once it’s been written everyone can understand, relate to and feel.

What’s your biggest session highlight so far?

I feel like every time I write a new song that it takes me back to the moment when I wrote my first song. It’s always exhilarating and always blows my mind. It’s been one of the highlights of my life to be able to create something out of nothing or rather find something that has always been there and transform it into being something special. It’s like being a child over and over and over again and it’s like a supernova to me.

How much do current market and track trends impact your creative process?

To be honest, they don’t. The word “trend” means to follow in a general direction. I like to think of myself as a person who’s always done my own thing and who isn’t a follower but someone who is working towards finding different ways to be me. If I was always following, then I don’t think I’d ever find myself and I think that knowing oneself is really one of the truest meanings of life.
